Impregnators and Seals

Impregnator sealers a re designed to penetrate below the surface of the stone or grout; and deposit solid particles in the pores of the stone or to coat the individual minerals below the surface of the stone. Water Oil and soil are restricted from entering the stone.

Impregnators can be solvent or water-based and usually contain silicone, siloxane, silane, methyl silicate, or other similar silicone derivatives.

Impregnators can also be classified into two types:

1.Water Based – Designed to repel water and water based chemicals.

Fruit drinks, tea, coffee, and fizzy drinks etc… Would be repelled by

  water based impregnator

2. Oil-Based – Designed to repel water and oil based liquids.

Cookingoil, grease, body oils, etc… Would be repelled by an oil

  base impregnator.

Stone/tile and grout are usually sealed with a premium impregnator (clear, natural look, breathable/non-coating allows for moisture vapour transmission) for protection. Impregnators do not produce a gloss to marble, travertine, limestone and granite. If a gloss is required, a polishing process will be the only way to accomplish it. Some limestone will not take a high gloss.
